Blokify – best 3D printer idea. Ever.

Actually, the only reason why I wrote the last post ‘I want one of those’ about 3D printers was that I wanted to post this about Blokify, which actually needs a 3D printer!

It is a standing joke in the Pontydysgu office that I am officially boss of toys while the rest of them get on with the highbrow hi-tech stuff.  I am the one that gets the Raspberry Pi’s , the Makey Makeys, the Drawdios and the lego robots to play with.  Interestingly, as soon as I get a new toy, the highbrow hi-tech colleagues are there ripping it out of my hands. Go figure.

Well they haven’t actually seen Blokify at work yet and I’m sharing it on Taccle2 before I tell them. They are going to be soooooo jealous!

If you want a whole class project for Blokify, we have tried “Town of the future” – each pupil or group can create their ‘building’ and because of the modular nature of the software blocks, they can fit together – or at least look like they belong together. You can suggest some possibilities – where do people live? Where do the spaceships land and refuel? How do people travel?

The other one I’ve tried is ‘Redesigning a Medieval Fortress’. Create a landscape (using almost anything – junk, lego, papier mache, play do) with room for two opposing armies defending something (a castle, a palace, a church, a magic tree, a golden goblet…). Let each team create fortifications, mazes, barriers, bear pits, trebouchets, things to tip boiling oil ….
