Lesson plan from Italy on Transport…

During the morning students will have to carry out the following activities and/or purchases:

A newspaper (news stand),

A piece of pizza/snack (pizzeria),

Exercise book (stationery store),

A pair of socks (underwear),

A map of the city (tourist office),

Leaflet for trip (travel agency),

Train schedule for trip (train station)

Author’s catalogue (bookstore)

Physical activity program (gym),

Library hours (municipal library)

Main subject areas and topics

Mathematics: relationships and functions. Graphics tables and diagrams. Matrix algebra, transportation problems and allocation

Computers: data processing

Physics: measurement units,  main tools and measurement techniques.

Safety elements: be careful not to get hurt during the outing.

How to do it

Each group has the list of activities.

The students will have to develop an online city trail using google maps in order to bring back what was asked in the least time possible.

Each group will have to return a report of the trail followed, justifying the choices.

Once the students return to class, they will have to take into consideration the different trails conducted and will collect the data in charts confronting the distance measurements and time studying the possibility of optimizing the trail.

The possibility of generalizing the problem will be taken into consideration considering that the ten stops of the list (knots of the graphs) can even represent sections/stations within a production industry.

Each group relates with the other groups on the part of activity carried out using electronic tools. All the material produced, conveniently organised, is loaded in Moodle (online platform).
